Aging is inevitable, but doing so in a healthy way is within our power.
If you want to maintain your health there are three guidelines that you must follow.
The first is to get moderate physical exercise.
Adults are advised to engage in at least an hour and a half a day of moderate aerobic activity, such as brisk walking.
In this way you will reduce your risk of a heart attack, stroke and death, improving your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose and weight.
Second, you must strive to inhabit an environment that generates excitement and reasons to live.
Enjoy things like your relationships, hobbies, culture, leisure and an attitude of service towards others.
And, lastly, embrace healthy eating habits.
A diet based on foods like vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, low-fat dairy, eggs, fish, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats like virgin olive oil; and the limited consumption of foods high in salt, saturated fat, trans fats, or added sugars.
Eating a healthy diet will help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight, improve your health, and help you prevent metabolic diseases like Type-2 Diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke. It will also decrease your risk of frailty.
A healthy diet will improve your health and help you prevent disease
Olive oil is an example showing us the benefits of eating habits enriched with plant foods.
Eating healthy foods with anti-inflammatory properties, among others, provides us with the basis to improve its protective effects against cardiovascular disease.
These foods are also beneficial against other chronic diseases in which inflammation plays an important role, such as diabetes, cancer, depression, cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease and familial hypercholesterolemia.
Therefore, eating habits based on a healthy diet such as the Mediterranean, together with moderate physical activity and positive social relationships will help us maintain good health and enjoy healthier aging.
